Volcanoes & Mountains Treks
The South-East Asia region is located on one of the worlds' largest "hot-spot": the Ring of Fire.
This "ring" extends from the Pacific to South East Asia, and onto Japan, Alaska, before going down the American West coast all the way to Peru. Many of History's biggest eruptions occured on this ring, and more specifically, in the South-East Asian region. The largest explosive eruption occured in Toba, on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia some 70,000 years ago The eruption was such that it covered the world with ash and submitted our planet to a volcanic winter of 6-10 years! Today, the Toba Volcano has a gigantic crater hosting a 500m-deep lake which is bigger than the whole of Singapore!
To find more about volcanoes in the region, you can search The Travelarium by making your selection below. The difficulty level is very subjective and I define them as follows:
Easy Hike - not much trekking involved, and easy to get to from Singapore.
Moderate Hike - Treks of more than 2 hours with big slopes, and a bit more complicated to get to from Singapore.
Challenging Hike - Treks of more than 1 day, very steep slopes with volcanic ash.
