Dramatic, majestic, frightening, famous, hidden; Volcanoes are truly fascinating! They are all over South-East Asia in one of the worlds' largest hot-spot: the Ring of Fire
This "ring" extends from the Pacific to South-East Asia, and onto Japan, Alaska, before going down the American West coast all the way to Peru. Many of History's biggest eruptions occurred on this ring, and more specifically, in the South-East Asian region. The largest explosive eruption occurred in Toba, on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia some 70,000 years ago The eruption was such that it covered the world with ash and submitted our planet to a volcanic winter of 6-10 years! Today, the Toba Volcano has a gigantic crater hosting a 500m-deep lake which is bigger than the whole of Singapore!
To find out more about volcanoes in the region, you can search The Travelarium by making your selection below. The difficulty level is very subjective and I define them as follows:
Easy Hike - not much trekking involved, and easy to get to from Singapore.
Moderate Hike - Treks of more than 2 hours with big slopes, and a bit more complicated to get to from Singapore.
Challenging Hike - Treks of more than 1 day, very steep slopes with volcanic ash.
